Maine's three gubernatorial candidates have different priorities for raising the state's minimum wage. While Gov. Paul LePage said he would rather focus on creating higher-paying jobs by reducing various business costs, like taxes, Democratic U.S. Rep Mike Michaud and independent candidate Eliot Cutler have voiced clearer support for raising the minimum wage. Both Michaud and Cutler said they would like to see a federal increase in the minimum wage, but if that doesn't happen, they would start with increasing the state's minimum wage from $7.50 to $9 an hour.
