The state increased the speed limits on portions of Maine's interstate highways and Route 1 this week, bringing some sections up to 70 miles per hour. Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt said the increases were approved after a study showed that "it's much safer if the [speed driven by most motorists] and the posted speed are the same," according to the Bangor Daily News. However, AAA of Northern New England has said the increased speed limits will create safety concerns.
