The Bangor Daily News reported that Gov. Paul LePage's two-year, $6.3 billion proposed budget calls for increasing the state's sales and service tax revenue by removing several exemptions while lowering the income tax at the same time. LePage's administration argues that this will reduce the overall tax burden for Mainers. However, Retail Association of Maine Executive Director Curtis Picard said he is concerned that increasing the sales tax to 6.5% could have a negative impact on merchants. More details about the sales tax plan can be found here.
