Falmouth seeks input on bag ban proposal

The Falmouth Town Council is seeking public input before it considers a proposal that would ban single-use plastic shopping bags, which would take it a step further than Portland’s bag fee policy.

The Forecaster reported that the proposal, in its current form, would take a phased approach over two years, starting with a 5 cent fee on paper and plastic bags at larger stores like Walmart and Hannaford the first year and then banning the use of plastic bags the second year.

The town council plans to have an ordinance in place by Jan. 1, 2016. If approved, it would join Portland in tightening restrictions on the use of single-use shopping bags along with other towns and cities, like South Portland, that are currently considering their own rules.
