'Greenlight Maine' charges into second season

Fans of “American Idol” looking to get their competitive television fix after the show called it a day last week might want to tune into “Greenlight Maine,” which pits some of the state’s hungriest entrepreneurs against each other in a series of pitch-offs.

What is missing from “Greenlight Maine” is the ratings-grab of meanness and dream-crushing judging panel. Instead, the show’s producer, Con Fullam, told the Lakes Region Weekly that the show is meant to showcase the DIY attitude for which Maine businesses are known.

“I don’t think that many of us realize how much amazing entrepreneurial endeavor is happening in the state,” Fullam told the Region Weekly. “From Kittery to Fort Kent, the innovation, the creativity, is astounding.”

The first season, which airs Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. on WCSH-TV 6, has seen its fair share of pitches, with the top 13 businesses ranging from the Orono-based Revolution Research, which develops eco-friendly materials for the construction and packaging industry, to season-leader Gimme Shelter, a company that provides shelter kits to the homeless.

The first season of “Greenlight Maine” is wrapping up and will conclude on April 23, but the show is already looking for entrants to be featured in the second season and is accepting pitches for the month of April.

The onslaught of video submissions from entrepreneurs across the state will be narrowed down to 52 quarterfinalists, who will then compete in a pitch-off event where only 26 semifinalists will remain to compete in a filmed, one-on-one pitch-off.
