Eight Maine companies make Inc.'s 'Fastest Growing' list

Landry/French Construction Co. and Tilson Technology Management are joined by six other Maine companies in Inc. magazine’s annual list of the 5,000 fastest-growing companies across the country.
Landry/Smith Vice President Kevin French told Mainebiz that making Inc.’s list came as a complete surprise. It was the first time the company, which became employee owned in May, ever applied to be considered in the business publication’s list.
“We have sought out the most talented people for our team, which we feel provides our clients with a great experience,” French wrote in an email to Mainebiz shortly after Inc. published its rankings. “Let’s face it, you are only as good as your last project, and we want our last client’s view of our company to help sell our next project. It has worked beyond our wildest dreams.”
Inc.’s rankings are based on a company’s growth over the last three years. Landry/French was the only Maine-based construction company that made this year’s list. The Scarborough-based company, which was one of Mainebiz’s 2015 Fastest Growing Companies, came in at No. 3,101 for its revenue of $38.8 million.
French said that a few projects in particular contributed to the growth, including a $20 million expansion at the OceanView at Falmouth retirement community, and the construction of a state office building at 151 Jetport Blvd. in South Portland that had a price tag of $11 million.
“Many said the 88,000-square-foot state office building could not be built in nine months,” French said. “We proved the naysayers wrong, and it was a successful project for everyone involved. I think this made people take notice of our company’s credibility.”
Tilson Tech's six-year streak
Although it was Landry/French’s first time on the list, the Portland-based telecommunications firm Tilson Tech. made Inc.’s ranking for its sixth consecutive year, coming in at No. 1,785 for the 2016 list.
Company CEO Joshua Broder told Mainebiz that only 20% of the businesses on the list have been named for more than five years in a row.
“That consistent ranking serves as recognition of our sustainable record for year-over-year growth,” Broder told Mainebiz in an email. “Since our first ranking in 2011 we have grown 500% and added 160 employees, for a total of 200 employees nationwide. We owe all of our success to that team and our clients.”
Broder singled out both Tilson’s involvement in the ambitious Three Ring Binder project, which connects some of the most underserved rural communities in Maine to an open access fiber-optic network, and Central Maine Power’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure Project, as contributions to Tilson’s reported revenue of $21.6 million in Inc.’s list.
“Tilson builds the technological infrastructure for the global economy and Maine’s economic future is being made right now by today’s technology infrastructure decisions,” said Broder. “As mentioned, being on the Inc. 5000 list six years in a row demonstrates that we have had a lot of national success as a Maine-based telecommunications company, so the industry certainly has potential in the state and we hope to continue our growth as we build the technological infrastructure Maine, and America, need to compete.”
