Recent showers help curb severe drought conditions

The ongoing drought conditions that have been bad news for farmers and have brought groundwater to low levels have subsided slightly as the severe-to-extreme drought conditions that afflicted over a quarter of the state last week have been curbed to under 20% of Maine.

"We did see an improvement in the drought monitor this week," National Weather Service hydrologist Tom Hawley told Maine Public. "We did have a fairly large area of extreme drought in southern Maine and that's been pared back to include just a portion of York County now. If things continue we may be able to pare it back a little more next week."

The U.S. Drought Monitor is reporting that nearly 70% of the state still is experiencing moderate drought conditions.
