UMaine System: Boost in out-of-state enrollment is good news for employers
University of Maine System officials say that the 1.6% increase in enrollment over last fall’s semester is a clear sign that its efforts to attract out-of-state students and its early college program for students at UMaine Fort Kent are paying off.
Maine Public spoke to Dan Demeritt, a spokesman for the UMaine System, who said that the system’s out-of-state students account for just over 9% of all of the system’s 24,465 students, a staggering 32% increase from four years ago.
And attracting out-of-state students will be good news for employers in Maine, according to Demeritt, who said the state’s aging workforce will benefit from young, college-educated employees.
“We’re going to lose so many people from our workforce through retirement in years to come that we have to have new people come to Maine, get their education here and, hopefully, many of them will stay here, as has typically been the case,” Demeritt told Maine Public.
