Ellsworth historic site receives $1 million gift toward expansion

Woodlawn, an Ellsworth historic estate that includes a museum, community and formal gardens and a public park, received a $1 million anonymous gift to help fund a multi-purpose facility.

The Campaign for Woodlawn effort, which received a separate $4 million matching grant from a private foundation in September 2015, will help pay for space for educational and recreational programs, visitor services, events, exhibitions and meetings, among other things.

“We are thrilled to receive this matching gift,” Executive Director Joshua Torrance said in a statement. “It allows us to move forward on this exciting project after several years of strategic planning and assessment. It’s going to be great for Woodlawn and transformative for Ellsworth.”

Torrance said the estimated project cost is $8.2 million, which includes the cost of building construction, site work and renovations of existing structures as well as soft costs involving design work, permitting, and contingencies.

“It also includes a significant endowment,” Torrance said.

The Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations, Woodlawn’s governing board, has worked closely over the past two years with Boston-based Oudens Ello Architecture and Cambridge, Mass.-based ConsultEcon, an economic and management consulting firm, to create a master plan for the 180-acre Woodlawn complex.
