Hugh Cowperthwaite, fisheries project director at CEI (right) with Dana Morse, extension associate at Maine Sea Grant College Program, were part of a Maine scallop fisheries delegation visiting Japan in October to learn farming practices that might translate to Maine. CEI plans to buy Japanese machinery to support the effort to expand the scallop fishery in the state.

Stakeholders in the scallop industry are expected to gather next year in Portland to share research and best practices.

WCSH 6 reported that the 2017 International Pectinid Workshop is scheduled for April 19-25 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay. The event will include international scientists, students and seafood industry representatives. The workshop has taken place biennially since 1976.

The event's committee includes representatives from Norway, England, Ireland, Chile and Australia, among other countries.
