Last May, the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates announced they were leaving Portland for Springfield, Mass. But Portland and the Cross Insurance Arena aren't sitting still as they seek new events to fill the arena's schedule. Brian Corcoran, CEO of Shamrock Sports and Entertainment, announced this week the return of the America East Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, which is coming to the Cross Insurance Arena in 2017 and 2018 for the first time in 20 years, with an expected economic impact of $2 million each year in games and related festivities. That's on the heels of Bayside Bowl's Feb. 15 announcement that it will host the 2017 L.L.Bean Professional Bowling Association's League Elias Cup and the MaineQuarterly.com Roth/Holman Doubles Championship this April. So we're curious.
Do you see these announcements as evidence momentum might be growing for Portland as venue for sporting events?
