Gov. Paul LePage has asked President Donald Trump to reverse President Obama's executive order creating the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. In a Feb. 14 letter he encouraged the president to enact the reversal “before economic damage occurs and traditional recreational pursuits are diminished.” And if that's not possible, LePage advocated for the federal government to turn over management of the land to the state “to accommodate the region's economic and regional needs.” Maine's U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King and Rep. Chellie Pingree countered with statements saying LePage's request was misguided and out-of-synch with local efforts already under way in the Katahdin Region to benefit economically from the national monument designation.
What's best for the Katahdin Region?
