Thousands remain without power due to blizzard
Almost 35,000 Maine residents were without power at mid-morning today due to the high winds and heavy snowfalls that arrived with Winter Storm Stella on Tuesday.
Central Maine Power Co. reported at 9 a.m. today that almost 27,000 customers were without power, most of them in York County. Emera Maine reported at 9 a.m. today that more than 8,500 of its customers were without power.
Maine Public reported that earlier Wednesday morning almost 45,000 customers were without power.
Maine Public also said that numerous crashes were reported throughout the state due to whiteout conditions, with wind gusts put at 50 miles per hour or more in some areas.
Due to the blizzard, Gov. Paul LePage closed all state offices at 2 p.m. Tuesday, encouraging all state employees “to drive safely as you commute to your destination.” The governor’s office also postponed a town meeting that had been scheduled for Wednesday evening in Gorham because of a parking ban that remains in effect. A new date has not yet been set.
The National Weather Service office in Gray reported snowfalls in southern Maine ranged from 22 inches in Lisbon Falls to 8.1 inches in Wells. Most communities reported average accumulations in the double digits.
