Lincoln eyes Superfund designation for former mill

Lincoln’s town council unanimously voted Thursday to explore whether the former Lincoln Paper and Tissue Mill would qualify for Superfund grants to help pay for removal of asbestos and other pollutants on the closed mill’s property.

Bangor Daily News reported cleanup costs could exceed $20 million at the 387-acre site.

The town’s attorney also recommended that Lincoln town officials work closely with their counterparts in East Millinocket and Millinocket to seek grants and develop strategic plans for the defunct Lincoln and former Great Northern Paper Co. mills.

A study of the former Lincoln Paper and Tissue Mill and surrounding property completed in late 2016 estimated the cost of asbestos removal alone at the closed mill could go as high as $16 million.
