J.C. Penney closing one Maine store

Maine did not escape unscathed from the widespread J.C. Penney store closings nationwide.

The Rockland Plaza at 75 Maverick St. in Rockland is among the 138 underperforming stores nationwide that the Plano, Texas-based retailer is closing, according to a CNBC report

Liquidation of the stores being closed is scheduled to start April 17.

In Maine, the retailer has other stores in Auburn, Bangor, Presque Isle, South Portland and Waterville.

When the closures were first announced in late February, USA Today reported that J.C. Penney CEO Marvin Ellison told investors the closures would allow the retailer “to raise the overall brand standard of J.C. Penney” and invest in its remaining stores.

J.C. Penney had 1,021 stores as of Jan. 30, 2016, down from a high of 1,108 in 2009, the newspaper reported at that time.
