Is Walmart looking to buy Wayfair?

Wayfair, the online furniture retailer that promised to create nearly 1,000 jobs in Maine, has been rumored as a takeover target.

The Boston Business Journal reported Tuesday on speculation that Walmart may be interested in buying Boston-based Wayfair.

Wayfair’s shares (NYSE: W) were near an all-time high on Tuesday after an analyst, Kelly Halsor of the Buckingham Research Group Inc., wrote in a memo that Wayfair would fit nicely into Walmart’s ecommerce-focused acquisition strategy, the Boston Business Journal reported.

Neither retailer would comment on the speculation.

With bricks-and-mortar retailers reeling from changes in consumers’ shopping habits, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Walmart is fighting retail trends by buying up ecommerce sites.

Wayfair said last year it planned to create 450 jobs at a Bangor call center and 500 full-time jobs at a customer service center at Brunswick Landing.
