Sea Bags, the Maine-based designer and manufacturer of handmade products from recycled sails, opened its 11th retail store in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard.

The 900-square-foot store, which opened May 5 at 19 Circuit Ave., is a five-minute walk from the town’s ferry terminal, where many of the island’s visitors arrive.

It is the company’s eighth store to open in two years.

“We’ve been looking for the right opportunity to open a store on Martha’s Vineyard, as we think this destination is a great fit for our brand,” Sea Bags CEO Don Oakes said in a news release. “The short sail from the mainland makes Martha’s Vineyard a popular destination for visitors and summer residents alike.”

In Massachusetts, Sea Bags has other stores in Newburyport, Rockport, Mashpee and Chatham. In Maine, it has stores in Portland and Freeport. Elsewhere, it has locations in Greenport, N.Y.; Mystic, Conn.; and Cape May, N.J.

The Oak Bluffs store will sell all of Sea Bags’ products and designs, as well as custom-designed products made specifically for the Vineyard market and nautical merchandise by select New England artisans.

It also will operate a “sail trade program in which consumers trade in used sails in exchange for a Sea Bags product. Sails are evaluated by size and condition to determine the trade. Through this process, Sea Bags has reclaimed more than 500 tons of sails since 2006. Last year, it took in 5,500 sails that would have otherwise gone to a landfill.

Founded in 1999, Sea Bags' home store is at 25 Custom House Wharf in Portland.
