Hinckley Yachts plans major expansion

Photo / David Clough Hinckley Yachts hires workers skilled in fine woodworking, composite technicial work and marine electrical systems. It has 260 employees in Trenton, 350 in Maine and 650 in New England.

Hinckley Yachts is planning a 19,500-square-foot expansion at its Southwest Harbor service yard.

The Mount Desert Islander reported the investment is expected to be $1 million. The company produces high-end luxury yachts at its Trenton plant, runs a service yard and marina in Southwest Harbor, and has additional service yards in Northeast Harbor and elsewhere along the East Coast.

Last year, Hinckley bought nearby Morris Yachts, maker of high-end sailboats. It also owns Hunt Yachts, in Portsmouth, R.I., and employs about 350 people in Maine.

With employment at an all-time high and sales of its jetboat line surging, the company launched its 1,000th jetboat in June 2016.

The yard expects to hire five new employees after construction is completed, which is expected to be this summer.
