SBA's 2017 awards banquet coming up in Freeport

The U.S. Small Business Administration Maine District Office in conjunction with SCORE Maine will hold its annual award celebration for 2017 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport on Monday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Here are this year’s awardees:

  • Maine Small Business Person of the Year: Leigh Kellis, owner of The Holy Donut in Portland, with a new store just recently opened in Scarborough.
  • Maine Veteran Owned Small Business of the Year and New England Veteran-Owned Business of the Year: Tilson Technology Management Inc., Portland, Joshua Broder, CEO.
  • Maine Woman Owned Small Business of the Year: Maine Foodie Tours, Portland, Pamela Laskey, owner.
  • Maine Young Entrepreneurs of the Year: Devin McNeill, CEO and Charles Friedman, chief information officer, Flowfold, Scarborough.
  • Jeffrey Butland Family Owned Business of the Year: Wilsons on Moosehead Lake, Big Moose Township, Alison and Scott Snell, owners.
  • Maine Small Business Exporter of the Year: Terra Speakers, Brunswick, James Banfield, president.
  • Maine Home Based Business of the Year: Afterlife Affections LLC, Washburn, Alisa and Justin Carney.
  • Maine Micro-Enterprise of the Year: Maine Music and Health LLC, Saco, Kate Beever, owner.
  • Maine Minority Owned Business of the Year: ARWO Learning Center LLC, Portland, Naima Abdirhmon, co-owner.
  • Maine Financial Services Champion of the Year: Ann Marie Swenson, senior vice president, regional manager business banking, People’s United Bank, Portland.

“I am delighted to recognize and honor our top small businesses for 2017,” said Amy Bassett, SBA district director for Maine. “Our small businesses work very hard, day in and day out to create the American Dream, and this event is a great way to call attention to the dedication and ingenuity of the owners of our small businesses.”
