A bill to combat the gender wage gap in Maine — in which women earn an average of just 78 cents for every dollar earned by men — is headed to the Senate for an initial vote. If LD 1259 becomes law, it would ban the “previous salary question” that perpetuates the wage gap, since the answer tends to favor men over women. In essence, the point of the bill is to have employers base the salary on the job itself, not on what the person has made previously.
How frequently do you ask job candidates how much they make at their current job?
