The Trump administration last week launched an effort to roll back a 2015 policy that protected more than half the nation's streams and wetlands from pollution, but which drew complaints from farmers, golf courses, real estate developers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as burdensome and an example of federal overreach. At issue is the Waters of the United States rule that extended Clean Water Act regulations to smaller streams and wetlands that flow into the rivers, lakes and “navigable waters” covered by the 1972 law. Four Maine breweries (Rising Tide Brewing Co., Baxter Brewing Co., Allagash Brewing Co. and Maine Beer Co.) have joined a national coalition of craft breweries opposing Trump's rollback effort, saying even smaller waterways are critical in ensuring the water they need to brew beer is clean.
