Red Barn video goes viral over misidentified $200 fine

A video posted by The Red Barn restaurant in Augusta, complaining about a $200 fine for exceeding noise limits at a fundraiser for a veterans’ organization, garnered 1.4 million Facebook hits from outraged viewers who besieged the city with calls and emails.

But the Morning Sentinel reports that fine was not actually imposed for owner Laura Benedict’s fundraiser for Honor Flight Maine, but rather for a later concert, which was unrelated to the fundraiser.

Mayor David Rollins said the city plans to pursue enforcement. Benedict posted an apology for her mistake, which received far fewer views.

“We all, in the age of false information and the internet, need to be very wary of what we read in a non-substantiated format like that,” Rollins said. “It can be lethal and it spawns serious problems and sometimes bad consequences.”
