West Elm to open Portland store

Home furnishings retailer West Elm is set to open its first Maine store in Portland.

The 12,000-square-foot store, at 164 Middle St., will open July 27. It will have 30 employees.

It joins a stretch that includes national retailers Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Starbucks and York-based Stonewall Kitchen, as well as Angela Adams, Bull Moose, Bard Coffee and several bank branches.

West Elm, which was founded in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2002, now has 100 stores.

The retailer said it plans to showcase wares from 10 Maine vendors: Elizabeth Benotti, Eliot; Fiber and Water, South Portland; GKS Furniture Maker, Portland; Hearth and Harrow, Rockport; Maineland Design Co., South Portland; More & Co., Portland; Portland General Store, Portland; Port Living Co., Biddeford; Weft & Warp, New Gloucester; and Katharine Watson, Portland.
