Schoodic Institute’s CEO to leave for new post with Nature Conservancy

Schoodic Institute, a public-private partnership with Acadia National Park that focuses on research and education, is looking for a new leader.

The nonprofit organization said President and CEO Mark Berry will step down Aug. 15 to join The Nature Conservancy as forest program director, leading that nonprofit’s forest conservation initiatives in Maine.

“It has been an honor, a pleasure and a great learning experience to serve Schoodic Institute as president and CEO since 2014,” Berry said in a news release “This is a fantastic organization with an important mission and a tremendous opportunity for further growth and success in the years ahead. I have enjoyed working with the outstanding staff and board and getting to know our many supporters.”

Alan Goldstein, chairman of Schoodic Institute’s board, credited Berry with being an “able leader” who “propelled the Institute forward and laid the groundwork for very exciting work into the future.”

“The institute is doing world-class science,” Goldstein said. “It is providing exceptional hands-on science learning opportunities to more than 750 students, and reaching thousands more through our professional development activities for high school science teachers. It is engaged in thoughtful conservation activities within Acadia National Park and beyond. And it is financially sound.”

Kevin Schneider, superintendent at Acadia National Park, described Schoodic Institute as a critical partner that helps expand the park’s educational reach and scientific understanding of its natural setting.

“We are grateful to Mark Berry for his outstanding leadership of the Institute, making it stronger than ever before,” he said.

Schoodic Institute has formed a search committee chaired by Kathleen Nauss, a retired toxicologist and environmental health scientist who serves on its board of directors, to identify the next president and CEO.
