New Bangor brewery rooted in science

A new brewery is opening in Bangor whose experimental brews, specializing in wild and sour flavors, are rooted in a fascination with science.

The Bangor Daily News reported that owners Justin Amaral, Sam Canders and Cody Allen expect to open Mainiacal Brewing’s brewery, tap room and smoker this fall in a former warehouse just outside downtown.  It was the only space large enough for the 2,000 barrels expected to be in production.

“The science of fermentation is really interesting,” Amaral, who consulted microbiology texts and with labs around the world on the topic, told the BDN.

Mainers' thirst for craft beer continues as brewers poured $227.95 million into the Maine economy in 2016 and employed 2,177, both figures including multiplier effects from related businesses.

In March, Sean Sullivan, executive director of the Maine Brewers' Guild, based in South Portland, told Mainebiz, that “destination breweries” are pulling tourists and Mainers to places that might not have a commercial enterprise to visit.

"These brewers are entrepreneurs that often are the first to revitalize unused Main Street spaces,” Sullivan said.
