Hancock seeks to transform old tannery into mixed-use complex

The Downeast town of Hancock has applied for two grants, totaling $480,000, to transform a dilapidated tannery for commercial and residential use.

The Ellsworth American reported the town has owned the former Hancock Ellsworth Tannery since the previous owner, TT Corp. LLC of Hermon, failed to pay back taxes in 2015. Most of the grant money would come from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s brownfields grant program.

Rich Campbell, who runs the Falmouth-based Campbell Environmental Group, which specializes in brownfields grants, told the paper the project envisions a revitalized area in Hancock with small businesses and affordable housing. Frenchman Bay Conservancy has committed to building a parking lot.

“It’s in a good area of Hancock and if we get it cleaned up, then we can do something with it,” Hancock Selectman Rick Merchant told the newspaper.
