Greater Portland Health lands $728K in federal grants

Greater Portland Health is to receive $727,846 in federal funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine, announced on Tuesday.

The Department’s Health Resources and Services Administration will issue the funds in the form of two grants:

  • $581,024 through the Health Cluster program, which targets the economic and medically vulnerable and the geographically isolated;
  • $146,822 through the Ryan White Part C Outpatient EIS program, which funds primary care for those living with HIV. It is one of five programs named for the late Ryan White, an Indiana boy who was diagnosed with AIDS at age 13 following a blood transfusion and died in 1990, one month shy of his high school graduation.

Greater Portland Health, formerly known as the Portland Community Health Center, serves more than 9,000 patients from four offices in Portland and one in South Portland. According to its website, its mission is to provide high-quality, patient-centered health care that is accessible, affordable and culturally sensitive. Besides primary care, it offers behavioral and oral care.

“Community health centers, like Greater Portland Health, help Mainers across our state receive the high quality care they deserve,” Collins and King said in a joint statement. “These federal grants offer critical support for people in the Greater Portland area, and we applaud HHS for recognizing Greater Portland Health’s commitment to the surrounding community.”

HRSA is an agency within HHS tasked with improving access to healthcare by building healthy communities, strengthening the health care workforce, and achieving health equity.
