Boston developer to convert former Camden school into 'maker-space'

Boston developer Michael Mullins, president of Mullins Management Inc., has submitted a proposal to School Administrative District 28 to redevelop the Mary E. Taylor School in Camden as a co-working facility and makerspace.

The PenBay Pilot reported the proposal includes using classrooms as they are currently configured, while dedicating 4,000 square feet to shared office and presentation space, conference areas and a pop-up cafe. Plans also call for creating a gallery, welcome center and library. He anticipates investing $780,000 in the project. The school was built in 1925 and was otherwise headed for demolition.

The future of the building has been debated since Camden and Rockport voted in June to build a new $26 million middle school on the existing Camden-Rockport Middle School campus, which entailed demolishing the entire existing complex of buildings that included MET.

Mullins Management, with annual revenues of $11 million, has focused on redevelopment of Lowell, Mass., mill properties, but also has midcoast Maine ties, including ownership of Cranesport LLC, which operates Cranesport Garage in Camden. Mullins also has family ties in Maine.

The mission of the maker-space and co-working facility would be “to promote lateral learning, sustainability, entrepreneurship and the expansion of hands-on skills for all age groups through a variety of programs,” according to his proposal.
