Bangor has been selected as the first location in Maine to deliver a U.S. Small Business Administration program geared to meet the needs of executives of small business poised for growth in emerging markets.

Recruitment for this spring’s classes in SBA’s Emerging Leaders Initiative is just beginning. Small business owners selected for the free intensive entrepreneurship education and training program will receive up to 100 hours of classroom time and have opportunities to work with experienced coaches and mentors, attend workshops and develop connections with peers, local leaders and the financial community.

Nationally, since its inception in 2008, SBA’s Emerging Leaders program has trained more than 5,000 small business owners — creating over 6,500 jobs, generating over $300 million in new financing and securing over $3.16 billion in government contracts, according to the SBA’s Maine district office.

“The Emerging Leaders Initiative prepares and encourages small business owners to take their businesses to next level, whether it be increasing sales, hiring more employees or developing new markets,” Amy Bassett, SBA district director for Maine, said in a news release. “Over the course of the program, the executives will develop a three-year growth action plan to expand their business, increase their company revenues and increase access to capital.”

Maine business executives interested in the 2018 Emerging Leaders Program in Bangor can apply at www.sba.gov/emergingleaders, or by contacting James Pineau, SBA’s senior manager in Bangor, at 207-945-2021, or by email at james.pineau@sba.gov.
