Maibec sells Masardis, St. Pamphile mills to another Quebec company

Maibec, a family-owned wood products manufacturing company based in Levis, Quebec, announced on Tuesday the sale of its lumber mill in Marsardis and the St. Pamphile mill in Quebec to Quebec-based Groupe Lebel. The 315 employees at the Masardis and St. Pamphile mills will maintain their employment with Groupe Lebel, according to the news release announcing the sale.
Aroostook County’s largest sawmill has been sold to a new Canadian owner, Groupe Lebel of Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

According to the news release, the 315 employees at the Masardis and St. Pamphile mills will maintain their employment with Groupe Lebel.
Maibec will now focus on growing its pre-stained exterior siding products, Maibec President François Tardif said.
“This transaction allows the Maibec employees who work in both sawmills to join a family owned Quebec company that is well established in the Lower St-Lawrence lumber industry,” Tardif stated. “Group Lebel will continue to develop its sawmilling sector and will be able to face new challenges in this sector with renewed confidence.”
Groupe Lebel is owned by the Lebel family and based in Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec. With the new sawmills, that firm will employ about 950 people, according to the news release.
The County reported that Tardif had acquired the former J. Paul Levesque sawmill in Masardis in 2015 and had announced plans earlier this year for a multi-million expansion at the facility, which produces dimensional lumber from spruce and fir.
The newspaper reported that Maibec — whose company name is a blend of “Maine” and “Quebec” — has long had ties to the North Maine Woods as a supplier of timber for the St. Pamphile mill, located 35 miles west of Allagash.
Groupe Lebel is a family business that has been working in forestry for over 60 years. Headquartered in Rivière-du-Loup in Lower St. Lawrence, it has facilities in 13 municipalities in Quebec and two in Ontario.
