‘Everyday’ Rockefeller items to be auctioned to benefit nonprofit

Nearly 400 items from the seasonal Mount Desert Island estate of the late David Rockefeller (which sold earlier this year for $19 million) will go on the auction block this Friday. Proceeds from the sale will benefit The Mount Desert Land & Garden Preserve, as specified in Rockefeller's will.

Nearly 400 items from the estate of seasonal Mount Desert Island resident David Rockefeller Sr. will go on the auction block this Friday.

Many are “everyday” items from Rockefeller’s Seal Harbor estate Ringing Point, Mount Desert auctioneer Jerry Miller, of Jerry Miller & Co., told the Bangor Daily News.

Proceeds will benefit The Mount Desert Land & Garden Preserve, as specified in Rockefeller’s will.

According to Miller’s website, selections include artwork, furniture, books, rugs and eclectica like a copper ship’s lantern, wicker picnic baskets and a bird form headpiece from Cameroon.

In February, The Knowles Co. of Northeast Harbor announced on its website that it sold Rockefeller’s summer home for $19 million. Proceeds of the sale, which went for the asking price, were destined toward charitable bequests made in Rockefeller's will. An American banker who was chairman and chief executive of Chase Manhattan Corp., Rockefeller was the oldest living member of the Rockefeller family and family patriarch from August 2004 until his death in March 2017 at the age of 101.

In May, Peggy and David Rockefeller's art collection went to auction. By the second day, proceeds had topped $750 million. Those proceeds also went to the Mount Desert Land and Garden Preserve and other Maine organizations.
