Mercy hires seasoned administrator for key leadership role

Mercy Hospital in Portland has hired a new leader for its physician practices.

David Fernandez, who comes from Summit Medical Group in New Jersey, will serve as a vice president, overseeing the hospital’s physician team.

“We feel very fortunate to have David join Mercy,” said Charlie Therrien, president of Mercy Hospital. “As a skilled operational leader with nearly 30 years of experience in the medical field, David is well positioned to lead the physician practices in the Mercy Medical Group. Working with our physician, practice, and executive leaders, he will work to drive the ongoing development of the expert care and services we offer the community.”

Prior to his role at Summit, Fernandez was vice president of the Cancer Hospital, Perioperative Services and The Neuroscience Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. He also spent a number of years in Massachusetts where he led cancer services at Lahey Clinic and held management positions at Bay State Health System.

Mercy Hospital is a member of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems. It provides a broad range of medical and surgical services through six primary care locations, five express care locations, and 22 subspecialty physician practices ranging from cardiology and spine surgery, to ENT and cancer care.

Mercy Hospital also includes Gary’s House and McAuley Residence.
