Portland’s Amistad recovery center expands to Bath

Amistad, a peer support and recovery center in Portland, has expanded into Bath.

The Times Record reported that in Bath Amistad is developing a variety of groups, classes and workshops to deal with issues like suicide, alcohol dependence and resume building. Mindy Harrison, who oversees The Peer Support Specialist Network of Maine and the new Bath location, told the newspaper the type of services to be offered is still evolving. It opened its program in Bath at the First Baptist Church in mid-July.

Amistad will also open a center in Boothbay, the newspaper reported.

According to its website, Amistad was established in 1982, begun by families of adults with severe and persistent mental illness. It became a 501(c)(3) corporation in 1996.

Originally known as a social club, the members in 2001 voted to describe themselves as a “peer support and recovery center.”

The name change was designed to reflect the awareness that Amistad had grown into a community of people committed to health, mutual support and recovery. Its mission is to foster a community of people facing mental health and other life challenges, expand peer services, and advocate for changes to the health system.

Earlier this month, Amistad received capacity building funds from the United Way. According to its news release, the money will be used to improve infrastructure and help manage its programs.
