Patricia Weigel, president and CEO of Norway Savings Bank, announced Thursday that the bank is donating $100,000 to nine Maine nonprofits as a result of its successful year in 2018.

Norway Savings Bank said it will share $100,000 from a successful year with nine Maine nonprofit groups serving Maine’s Oxford, Androscoggin, Cumberland, York and Sagadahoc counties.
“2018 was a very good year for the bank,” said Patricia Weigel, Norway Savings’ president and CEO, in a Thursday press release. “Sharing this outstanding success with our communities is at the heart of our heritage.”
As for deciding where the money goes, she said the bank targeted organizations throughout its footprint of branch locations.
“We know that nonprofits depend heavily on private businesses and individuals to support their communities and causes,” Weigel said. “We are proud to be in a position to make these meaningful gifts — and the nonprofits were surprised and delighted to get this news.”
Beneficiaries include Hospice of Southern Maine in Scarborough, in the first installment of Norway Savings’ three-year commitment to help the institution construct a new building to train and dispatch its nurses, social workers and volunteers to serve more than 200 home-bound patients. Construction is due to begin in May 2019.
The other recipients are as follows:

  • The Progress Center, Norway
  • Responsible Pet Care, Norway
  • Oxford Hills Food Pantry, Norway
  • Seeds of Independence, Brunswick
  • Tedford Housing, Brunswick
  • Lakes Environmental Association, Bridgton
  • Maine Center for Entrepreneurs, Portland
  • Tree Street Youth, Lewiston.
Weigel, a banking-industry veteran of more than 30 years, joined Norway Savings Bank in 2001 and is the first female president in the bank’s history. She was elected chair of the Maine Bankers Association in June and, more recently, to the American Bankers Board of Directors for 2018-2019.
