Geico, the nationwide insurance company owned by Warren Buffett’s conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway Inc., has opened its first office in Maine, staffed by seven licensed agents.

The company announced the opening of an office, led by Ashley Bullard, in Portland’s Northgate Plaza, at 91 Auburn St.

Bullard previously worked as a sales agent at Geico’s local office in Hampton, Va., for three years, and helped open the agency’s second local office near Richmond, Va.

While Geico is best-known for selling car insurance, as touted by the quirky British-accented animatronic gecko in its television commercials, it also peddles coverage for homeowners, renters, condos and identify theft protection as well as umbrella liability insurance.

With Maine outdoor-minded consumers in mind, the company said its Portland team can also assist with coverage for boats, RVs, ATVs and motorcycles.

“Residents across the state of Maine have a strong sense of community,” Bullard said in a press release. “That gives us excellent opportunity to deliver Geico’s insurance products with a personal touch, while also building strong ties with local Portlanders and those in other areas of the states.

Geico said its agents in Portland look to offer savings to policyholders through multi-line and special association and alumni discounts, saying that alumni of the University of Maine and the University of New Hampshire may qualify for additional new savings.

Geico, originally known as the Government Employees Insurance Co., was founded in 1936 and insures more than 27 million vehicles.
