Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine on Thursday named Denise McDonough, an insurance industry veteran with more than 20 years experience, as president of Anthem’s commercial business in Maine.

“Denise brings a wealth of experience to this role and a commitment to making health care simpler and improving the lives of the people in the communities we serve,” said Brian Shipp, president of Anthem‘s East and Central Region Commercial Business. “She possesses an in-depth knowledge of the industry and the New England market, which will greatly benefit our consumers, customers and provider partners in Maine.”

McDonough joined Anthem in 2010 as director of sales in New Hampshire. In 2011, she was promoted to her current role as regional vice president of sales for the New Hampshire commercial plan, where she has led growth and retention efforts across Anthem’s large group, small group and individual business lines for the last seven years.

Prior to her career at Anthem, McDonough was in sales management at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care for 13 years.

“It’s an honor to be asked to lead Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine, and I look forward to collaborating with employers, providers, and others to achieve better health outcomes for the people we serve,” McDonough said in a news release. “The past few years have been a time of unprecedented change and innovation in our industry, and that pace only continues to increase. I’m excited about the opportunities this provides to better serve our consumers in Maine.”

McDonough has a bachelor’s degree from Boston College and a master’s degree from Emerson College. She is a member of the board of directors of Court Appointed Special Advocates-NH (CASA-NH) and will be based out of Anthem’s South Portland office.
