With ice cream season upon us, Gifford's widens its supermarket distribution

Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream, headquartered in Skowhegan, plans to build on its East Coast growth with expanded store sales in New England, as well as wholesale sales in the mid-Atlantic and Southern states.

It also announced an expanded partnership with Maine coffee company Aroma Joe’s, as well as a new one with Colby College.

Gifford’s, which had 5.1% growth last year, partnered with distributor Sysco Columbia, in South Carolina, and this year plans to add bulk sales in Florida.

New England retail growth will include Gifford’s ice cream will include more offerings in the southern New England Shaw’s and Star Markets stores, as well as growing with Stop n Shop New England to more than 150 stores throughout New England, Giffords announced in a news release.

Gifford’s quarts will be added this spring to stores in Weis Markets, which has 200 stores in Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware.

It also announced an expanded partnership with Portland-based Aroma Joe’s, which has 64 Maine stores. Along with an Aroma Joe’s-based ice cream flavor introduced last year, Giffords will do cross-promotion with the coffee retailer.

The Colby College partnership will include working closely with Colby’s students on projects that include include survey analysis to help Gifford’s gain a better knowledge of its current and future customer base.

Partnerships with the Boston Bruins and the Travis Mills Foundation, will continue, Gifford’s said.

New flavors for 2019

Gifford’s five Maine ice cream stands open Friday, and seven new flavors will be introduced, as well as offering soft serve at its Bangor stand. Other stands are in Skowhegan, Waterville, Auburn and Farmington.

New flavors are:

  • Aroma Joe’s PB Mocha, which combines Aroma Joe’s cold brew blend and Gifford’s chocolate for a “mocha-licious ice cream rippled with peanut butter and studded with chocolate chips”
  • Blackberry Cobbler, which has blackberry ripples and vanilla wafer cookies surrounded with vanilla ice cream
  • Unicorn Delight, a mix of vanilla, fairy dusted with a pastel rainbow of confetti and stirred together with ultraviolet bubblegum
  • Pumpkin Pecan Praline Whirl, which will be available August through October, and has a brown sugar cinnamon ribbon that winds through spiced pumpkin ice cream stocked with praline pecans
  • Pink Fla-mango Frozen Yogurt, pink grapefruit swirls alongside mango twirls
  • Vanilla NF/NSA, no-fat vanilla ice cream sweetened with Splenda and made for skinny sundaes, shakes or scoops; watermelon sherbet, available in May and 99% fat-free.
