States get extension on health insurance exchange
The federal government is giving states like Maine more time to consider whether to run their own health insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act, according to The Associated Press.
Under the ACA, states are required to notify the federal government by Nov. 16 whether they would set up their own health insurance exchange, or proceed with a federally managed health insurance exchange or a partnership with the federal government.
Gov. Paul LePage's office told Mainebiz in October that the state was still "assessing options" for complying with the health care overhaul to create a pooled insurance system where uninsured people can directly compare and purchase health care insurance plans.
Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the federal Department of Health and Human Services, told the AP that states will now have until mid-December to submit detailed plans for setting up their own exchanges and until mid-February to submit plans for a partnership with the federal government.
