UMaine Business Challenge opens systemwide

The UMaine Business Challenge is now open to contestants throughout the state university system.

The Maine Campus reported that the challenge, which provides a $5,000 cash prize and legal and marketing help to the best business idea submitted by a student, will accept original business plans from students enrolled in any part of the University of Maine System.

In its first year, the contest was only open to students from the Maine Business School and the Foster Center for Student Innovation.

Organizers hope expanding the two-year-old contest systemwide will increase the competition's impact.

In its first year, the challenge was won by brothers Luke and Jake Thomas and their business AerialFly, which provides aerial photography for customers.

Executive summary submissions are accepted through Feb. 3; the contest takes place April 20.
