CMP offers $15K grants to buy or lease plug-in cars

Central Maine Power Co. is offering a limited number of grants, up to $15,000 per recipient, to encourage the use of plug-in hybrid or electric cars in Maine.

According to The Associated Press, CMP’s Program Manager Adam Cutter said the company is looking to evaluate the different options of electric vehicles available in today's market. Participants will be required to collect data about how the vehicle is being used during the first two years of use.

The grants can be used to purchase or lease an electric vehicle as well as purchase and install a Level 2 (240 volt) or Level 3 (direct current) vehicle charging station.

On its website detailing the program , CMP says it hopes to cover “a range of geographic areas, include different types of businesses and organizations, and support a variety of electric vehicle models.” It also stated that special consideration would be given to applicants planning to evaluate the use of electric vehicles “as an option to store off-peak energy for use during peak periods and/or for frequency or voltage support.”
