Commercial flights to return to Portsmouth airport
Commercial flights will return to the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease but officials have not released the name of the airline that will operate there.
Seacoast Online reported officials from the Pease Development Authority are expected to make an announcement about the new carrier Tuesday.
In November, officials from the Portland-based Elite Airways told Mainebiz the company had an interest in connections between Melbourne, Fla., and Portsmouth, N.H., Worcester, Mass., and upstate New York. Representatives from Elite were not immediately available for comment this morning. Dave Mullen, executive director of the Pease Development Authority, told Mainebiz today that he could not confirm nor deny that Elite is the airline planning to operate from Portsmouth.
In January, Mullen told the Portsmouth Patch that the development authority was in talks with an airline looking to provide direct commuter service between Pease and Florida.
The announcement comes after several previous attempts to land commercial air service at the airport failed, most recently in 2011 when Streamline LLC backed out of plans to provide service between Portsmouth and Trenton, N.J. Before that, Skybus operated out of that airport.
