Market Basket now open in Biddeford

Market Basket opened its new Biddeford store Sunday, ushering in a new era of fierce competition between Maine supermarkets for the food-purchasing dollars of grocery shoppers.

The new 107,000-square-foot store at the Biddeford Crossing plaza is stocked with 60,000 products and includes a sushi bar, lunch counter and pizza shop. It’s the Massachusetts-based supermarket chain's first store in Maine and will bring the total of Market Basket stores to 72. All the other stores are in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The Portland Press Herald reported Market Basket’s Biddeford store is the largest supermarket in Maine. By 7:15 a.m. Sunday, the paper reported, the 500-car parking lot was full and each of the store’s 24 registers had lines of food purchasers waiting to pay for their groceries.
