State splits natural gas contract

The state has split contract awards for natural gas distribution deals to 30 state-owned buildings in the Augusta area to competing bidders Maine Natural Gas and Summit Natural Gas of Maine.

The Morning Sentinel reported the state awarded 19 of the natural gas projects to Maine Natural Gas, which bid on 25, and the other 11 to Summit Natural Gas of Maine.

The agreements with Maine Natural Gas amount to $965,464 and the deals with Summit total $765,451.

The latest awards stand to put an end to a long dispute over the state contract after Maine Natural Gas won the deal to provide natural gas to state-owned buildings last year. That decision faced appeal by Summit and the state eventually threw out all bids in that round.

Both companies began building out their natural gas infrastructures in the Augusta area and Kennebec Valley earlier this year.
