Maine hospitals are nation's safest, Leapfrog Group says

The nonprofit Leapfrog Group ranked Maine hospitals as the safest in the country, giving the state an overall “A” grade for the second year in a row.

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported the latest ranking rates a hospital on its structure and management and the frequency of what the group calls “never” events. An example of such an event, Leapfrog President and CEO Leah Binder told the station, would be a foreign object left in a person’s body after surgery.

Binder said the state should take pride in the safety rankings, but noted that nearly 400,000 people die nationwide from hospital errors every year. Most of those errors, she said, are the result of mistakes in administering medications.
