The Veazie-based Qualey Granite & Quartz is expanding its reach in southern Maine by opening a wholesale showroom and designer work room for its granite supply business in Portland's Pine Tree Industrial Park.
The Portland Press Herald reported the pending expansion comes after the company decided to close its retail operations earlier this year, which Qualey said put the company in competition with customers to whom it sells granite wholesale.
Qualey, named Maine's Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration earlier this year, said he initially plans to hire five people to work in the new showroom. He said the new location will help the company grow its market share in the southern part of the state, where he expects to compete with companies like Blue Rock of Maine in Kennebunk, Bangor Wholesale Laminates and Morning Star Stone and Tile in Topsham.
Qualey told the paper he's eyeing more locations but declined to say where. In Portland, he plans to have a grand opening for the showroom later this month.
