Maine Farmland Trust approaching 2015 fundraising goal

The Maine Farmland Trust has raised $18 million of a $50 million goal that the organization would use to protect farmland and bolster the state’s agricultural sector.

The Bangor Daily News reported the trust announced its progress during the three-day Maine Agricultural Trades Show, which started Tuesday. John Piotti, the farmland trust’s executive director, said the $50 million would help protect at least 100,000 acres of farmland, supporting 1,000 farmers. So far, the trust has preserved more than 36,000 acres of farmland. The organization hopes to reach its fundraising goal by 2015.
