Banks, credit unions target elder financial abuse

Employees at banks and credit unions around the state will get special training to better identify signs of elder financial abuse through a program launched in collaboration with state officials and a legal service nonprofit.

The Morning Sentinel reported the program aims to help employees of financial institutions recognize signs of financial abuse. Training for a bout 200 bank and credit union workers is set to start this week through the Senior$afe program. The newspaper reported that nationally seniors lose an estimated $2.9 billion per year to financial abuse.

The program has been in development with the Maine Bankers Association, the Maine Credit Union League, the nonprofit Maine Legal Services for the Elderly and the aging services and regulatory divisions of Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services.
