More than 20K sign up for ACA coverage

More than 20,000 Mainers signed up for health insurance plans through the federal website set up by the Affordable Care Act through Feb. 1, up 13,704 enrollees from the end of December, according to the Bangor Daily News. The pool of eligible enrollees in Maine is estimated to be from 65,000 to 104,000.

Nationally, the paper reported that enrollment jumped in January 53% from the previous three months, with nearly 1.1 million more selecting a plan. Those enrollees counted in the latest figures from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services may not have paid their first premium, which is typically how insurers define enrollment, the paper reported.

The paper reported the latest data shows little change in the age makeup of enrollees in Maine. People from age 45 to age 64 made up 61% of enrollees so far and those from age 18 to 34 made up 19% of enrollees.
