Maine's 2013 lobster catch hits record value
Maine’s lobster catch brought in a record $364.5 million in 2013, with a catch of more than 100 million pounds for the third year in a row.
The Associated Press reported the Department of Marine Resources estimated in preliminary figures a lobster catch of 126 million pounds, about 1% lower than the record haul. The total value of the catch grew by about 6%, or $23 million above the previous year.
The Bangor Daily News reported the average price per pound increased 20 cents this year to $2.89, which is higher than recent years but still below wholesale prices in the mid-2000s, when prices were more than $4 per pound.
The AP reported industry watchers speculate that the years of record catch volume will end at some point but that conservation efforts have helped the lobster fishery stave off the population declines seen for groundfish species like cod, haddock and others.
