Canada OKs sending oil sands in Maine’s direction

Canada’s National Energy Board has approved a plan for Enbridge Inc. to reverse a 500-mile pipeline, bringing oil sands, also known as tar sands, from Alberta to a refinery in Montreal.

The Portland Press Herald reported environmentalists in Canada and Maine expressed concern the plan is part of a long-term effort to export oil sands from Alberta through ports in the eastern United States. In Maine, environmental groups led a campaign aiming to prevent the export of oil sands from a terminal in South Portland, saying it is dirtier to refine and more dangerous to ship through pipelines. Oil companies say the oil sands are no riskier than traditional crude oil.

Portland Pipe Line Corp. spokesman Jim Merrill told the newspaper that Enbridge’s announcement does not change anything, and there is no project proposed, pending or imminent to reverse the flow of that line.
